Calendula

October’s Happy Plant of the Month:

All about Calendula (Calendula oficinalis)

“Herbal Sunshine” - Chris Hafner

Oh Calendula, you sweet, sunshiny plant whose love for us knows no bounds. Calendula has always held a special place in my heart. They are an herb I turn to for many personal ailments and one who continues to show up for me again and again. I was first introduced to Calendula when I took an herbal certification course through SW Herb Shop and Gathering Place in Downtown Mesa in AZ (beautiful shop, could not recommend it enough). Calendula has stuck with my since. Someone I turn to with irritated skin, with swollen lymph, with gut irritations, for uterus support. Calendula seems to do it all. So let’s dive in to all things Calendula oficinalis.

The Physical

  • Deeply supports the lymphatic, immune, and digestive system as well as the skin, liver, and uterus

  • Gently helps heal swollen and painful lymph nodes

  • An incredible wound healing remedy

  • Great topical remedy for sunburns

  • Cleans wounds from the inside out

  • Modulates inflammation in the GI tract

  • Can help relieve painful menstruation

The Spiritual

  • “Herbal Sunshine” - Chris Hafner

  • Gently lifts our consciousness

  • Ruled by the sun

  • Beautifully relates to the water element

  • Relates to the solar plexus chakra and the sacral chakra

Best ways to use calendula

  • Tincture (anywhere from 1-3 drops to 1tsp)

  • Infused oil/salve: yields nicely to all sorts of carrier oils, i.e. olive oil

  • The oil can be combined with beeswax and other oils/essential oils to create a topical medicine

  • Infusion (tea) (2-3 tbsp in 1 cup of hot water)

  • Powder form (3-6grams)

In the garden of healing, calendula is the sunshine that nurtures and heals.
